07/04/08  Double Header Weekend Recap

The Badger Kart Club attempted a doubleheader weekend to close out the month of June at the Badger Raceway in Dousman, Wisconsin. The event was planned as two complete and separate days of racing for their Bridgestone Championship Points series. Mother Nature had other plans however.

The Saturday event moved along well until a strong thunderstorm came through forcing officials to cancel the program prior to the completion of round two in heat race action. Per the club’s rules, the classes that completed both heats would be awarded feature points based on where they were slated to start in their feature. That position was determined by the heat results, with those finishing best, getting the best starting spots in the main event, as per club rules. The classes that only ran one heat were each awarded equal points.

Despite a stop and go day due to intermittent showers, the club was able to complete the Sunday show. All heat races were run to their full-length, but the features were cut in half, to four laps to ensure the 6 p.m. curfew was met.

In Briggs Senior Animal feature action, fans saw several lead changes and an unlikely winner considering the short sprint there was to the checkers. At the start, the first six karts were nose to tail early on, with Mike Gahagan taking the lead from the pole, in the eight kart field. Leanna Ostrowski, Joseph Ciszek, Jenny Swiercz, Jake Leichtfuss and Dan Beck made up the rest of the train.

At the line on lap one, Gahagan and Ostrowski had pulled away from the field and it appeared they would be battling for the win. Ostrowski got by Gahagan in the Boot of the track and lead the second lap. As they passed the line for lap two, Gahagan got a run and passed Ostrowski back, coming into the second hard left hander. The lead-swap by the front runners allowed others to catch up. Before the first right-hand turn it was again a multi-kart race as Beck also got by Ostrowski and Leichtfuss came in to comprise the caboose, in the lead train of four.

Gahagan pulled Beck and Ostrowski as the white flag flew. The three whipped around about five corners before Beck sped past Gahagan in the Boot. Beck then sailed to a five length win over Ostrowski and Gahagan. After the race Beck noted that he just tried to quickly, but patiently pick off one kart at a time from his sixth starting spot. During the day he was fortunate to find a talented welder on grounds (4 Cycle Central), as he broke a spindle in the second heat. Beck raced with the repaired part, which was not pretty, but certainly functional. He noted that the light mist which fell through part of the race did seem to make the track slick in spots and the rear of his kart did slide out a couple of times. "I was just crossing my fingers someone wouldn’t catch us," he noted of his win.

The results listed below are by class, with up to the top three feature finishers being noted.
